Enzo Maresca has not ruled out the possibility of Tosin Adarabioyo or Axel Disasi leaving Chelsea this month.
The Blues have been hit by a shortage of centre-backs following hamstring injuries to Wesley Fofana and Benoit Badiashile, acting decisively on Tuesday evening to recall Trevoh Chalobah from his loan spell at Crystal Palace.
Chalobah joins Adarabioyo, Disasi and Levi Colwill as available centre-backs for Monday’s match against Wolves, although Colwill is nursing a minor knock. Josh Acheampong, 18, has also been named as a central defender in recent weeks, starting in the last two league matches.
Despite the alleged shortage of centre-back options, it has been reported that Disasi is wanted by clubs in the Bundesliga and Serie A, with Adarabioyo linked with Brighton.
Chelsea manager Maresca explained that the club was not considering losing either player but that all eventualities were possible this month.
“At the moment it’s both of them,” Maresca said of Disasi and Adarabioyo.
“The intention is not to allow them to leave, but it’s January and anything can happen.”
Chelsea have seen their form halted in recent weeks by a run of five consecutive league matches without a win, partly due to their ineffectiveness in front of goal.
Maresca is pleased with the level of Chelsea’s performance but admits frustration at missed opportunities.
“Of course when you score goals it helps to win matches,” Maresca said.
“If you analyze game by game – for example, the last one against Bournemouth – it was probably one of our best first halves. By scoring the second, the game probably changed completely.
“THE [Crystal] Palace One, we were 1-0 up until the 82nd minute, with five or six clear chances. If you are clinical and score the second, the situation changes. The previous game [against] Ipswich, the same thing happened.
The Italian added: “I’m not saying we’re fantastic and we just need more goals. I think we need to improve many, many things. But it’s certain that in these matches where we didn’t win, by probably being a little more clinical, we would have at least three out of four more points. It would be a completely different picture.
